University of Wolverhampton Research Culture Rated Among the Best in the Country by Postgraduate Students

The research culture at the University of Wolverhampton is among the best in the country, according to a national survey of postgraduate students.

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey is a national survey run by Advance HE to gather information about the experience of any research student on a doctoral or research master’s course.

The survey focuses on postgraduate students’ experiences of their supervision, resources, the research community, progress and assessment and also wellbeing.

The findings highlight a strong research culture at the University of Wolverhampton, with satisfaction with this ranked at 5th out of the 89 institutions that took part.

The results also showed the University was 11th for professional development and 12th for research supervision.

The University had the second highest response rate in the UK to the PRES survey, with 83% of eligible students taking part during 2021.

Professor Silke Machold, Dean of Research, said: “We are delighted with the results of the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey, which really highlight the strength of the research culture at the University of Wolverhampton. To be ranked 5th out of 89 institutions for this is testament to the hard work and commitment of our staff to ensuring our postgraduate students have the best experience and support possible.

“There were also substantial improvements in research skills, professional development and research supervision. The feedback we receive from our students is really important to us and we are analysing the comments submitted by students to continue to grow and develop our support and offering for our postgraduate community"

Dr Benjamin Halligan, Director of the Doctoral College, said: "Of all this excellent feedback, I'm particularly happy to see the very high levels of satisfaction with supervision, expressed by our postgraduate researchers. Regular and constructive supervision sessions are the key to ensuring timely and successful doctorate completion."

Data from the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey allows universities to compare their institution’s postgraduate provision against others in the sector at a national, institution and discipline level.
