Teesside University: Ambitious plans unveiled for cutting-edge £35m science, health and medical facility

Teesside University has announced plans for a new £35m central science and medical building which will further transform and modernise the learning experience for its health students.

BIOS will be a high-quality, state-of-the-art new facility at the heart of the Middlesbrough campus, and will provide cutting-edge new laboratories for the sciences and clinical subjects.

The ambitious development forms part of the University’s dynamic Campus Masterplan, which has already seen £275m invested to date across developments which have transformed the university campus and the town of Middlesbrough.

Supporting the University’s thriving School of Health & Life Sciences, BIOS will house four floors of cutting-edge lab space for subjects including anatomy, imaging, microbiology, chemistry, earth sciences and food sciences.

The £35m development includes specialist equipment to enable new and interactive forms of learning for core health and allied health provision, including a growing postgraduate medical offer. Key features will include:

  • A clinical skills floor, incorporating an innovative immersion suite for digital teaching.
  • A purpose-built Operating Department Practice suite to support the development of these key workers.
  • A wellbeing floor to assist new provision in oral health, as well as expanded provision in the Food Sciences.
  • Flexible facilities to support the ongoing development of Occupational Therapy degrees.
  • A range of new life sciences laboratories which will support subjects of key importance to the region, including pharmaceutical science, human biology and biomedicine.

Work on BIOS is set to get underway next month with Teesside University continuing its partnership with Wates Construction, which successfully delivered recent projects including the award-winning Cornell Quarter student accommodation and the National Horizons Centre, based at the University’s Darlington campus.

Summers-Inman has also been appointed as consultants for BIOS.

Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Teesside University, Professor Paul Croney OBE, said: “The global pandemic has provided many challenges, but it also highlighted the critical importance of health, medicine and the sciences.

"BIOS will help us to provide more modern, flexible and digitally-enabled learning spaces to help train the next generation of health professionals and provide a compassionate, forward-thinking and inclusive learning environment."

“This latest development reinforces our position as an ambitious, global-looking university which is committed to investing in our region and establishing Teesside as a thriving hub for skills development, creativity and inspiration.”

Professor Tim Thompson, Dean of Teesside University’s School of Health & Life Sciences, added: “This is an incredibly exciting development for our School and for the University.

“We always strive to meet the demands of regional and national employers. BIOS will help us to provide more modern, flexible and digitally-enabled learning spaces to help train the next generation of health professionals and provide a compassionate, forward-thinking and inclusive learning environment.

“It will also allow us to bring together delivery of health and human sciences subjects, providing a holistic view of the healthcare-bioscience ecosystem.”

BIOS is the latest development in the University’s Campus Masterplan, with ongoing projects including the £13.1m Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre, putting Teesside at the heart of the UK’s green industrial revolution, as well as the £5m Postgraduate Student Hub, a dedicated space for postgraduate students and researchers to study, collaborate and connect.

Situated between The Curve and Centuria Buildings, BIOS is due to be completed in autumn next year in time for the 2023/24 academic year.
