Solent University awarded Race Equality Charter award

Solent University, Southampton has achieved Bronze Race Equality Charter (REC) status, in recognition of its commitment, plans and work to create a transformative and inclusive environment for all.

The REC's mission is to improve the representation, experience, progression and success of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students within higher education. It provides a rigorous and robust framework through which institutions work to critically reflect and act on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of the progression and success of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students.

Professor Nona McDuff OBE, Pro Vice-Chancellor Students and Teaching says, “We are immensely proud to be awarded the Race Equality Charter Bronze Award. This achievement is an important milestone in our ongoing work to create a transformative and inclusive environment for all and the process has shone a light on the practical steps we need to take.”

Professor Peter Lloyd, Dean of the Faculty of Creative Industries, Architecture and Engineering, and Co-Chair of the University’s REC Self-Assessment Team, says, “Well done to all the self-assessment team members and the REC lead Alexandra Banks. We have used the Charter process to help us identify institutional and cultural barriers that may impact minority ethnic students and staff and reflect on where we can better support success.

“This ongoing work is an essential part of our widespread efforts to create a welcoming, diverse and inclusive University, which supports the aspirations of all those who wish to learn and succeed,” adds Dr Diane Bray, Dean of the Faculty of Sport, Health and Social Sciences, and Co-Chair of the REC Self Assessment Team.

There are currently 96 REC members holding 24 awards between them, including Solent.

Dr Arun Verma, Head of REC at Advance HE, says, “REC Bronze is recognition of an institution’s robust foundation for eliminating racial inequalities, developing inclusive cultures and moving from commitment to sustainable and integrated bold and ambitious action.

“Advance HE looks forward to supporting Solent University as it progresses its action plans to advance race equality.”
